DESCRIPTION
Thrombophob Ointment is a topical medication primarily used to treat localized swelling, inflammation, and blood clots under the skin. It is frequently prescribed for superficial vascular conditions.
Key Active Ingredients
The ointment typically contains a combination of:
-
Heparin Sodium: An anticoagulant that prevents blood from clotting and helps dissolve existing small clots.
-
Benzyl Nicotinate: A vasodilator that improves local blood circulation and enhances the absorption of Heparin.
Primary Therapeutic Uses
-
Superficial Thrombophlebitis: Inflammation of a vein near the surface of the skin, often caused by a small blood clot.
-
Hematomas & Bruising: Speeds up the resolution of localized collections of blood caused by trauma or injury.
-
Infusion Thrombophlebitis: Swelling or soreness at the site of an IV injection or catheter insertion.
-
Sprains and Strains: Relieves pain and swelling associated with minor sports injuries.
Mechanism of Action
When applied to the skin, the Benzyl Nicotinate causes the blood vessels to widen (vasodilation), which may cause a temporary redness or warming sensation. This allows the Heparin to penetrate deeper into the affected tissue, where it works to break down fibrin (the protein that forms clots) and reduce inflammatory fluid buildup.
Application & Safety
-
Method: A thin layer should be applied gently to the affected area 2–3 times daily. Do not rub vigorously, as this can aggravate the underlying inflammation or dislodge a clot.
-
Contraindications: Do not apply to open wounds, mucous membranes (eyes/mouth), or infected skin.
-
Side Effects: Some users may experience mild skin irritation, redness, or a burning sensation. If a severe rash or allergic reaction occurs, usage should be discontinued.
