DESCRIPTION
Metrogyl-P 2% Cream is a specialized topical medication that combines the antimicrobial power of Metronidazole with the broad-spectrum antiseptic properties of Povidone-Iodine. This dual-action formula is primarily used to treat infected wounds, burns, and various skin infections.
Clinical Applications
This cream is typically prescribed for:
-
Infected Wounds: Treating surgical wounds or injuries that have developed bacterial infections.
-
Burn Care: Preventing and treating infections in minor to moderate burn injuries.
-
Diabetic Foot Ulcers: Managing chronic ulcers where anaerobic bacteria are often present.
-
Skin Infections: Addressing pyoderma or other bacterial skin conditions.
Mechanism of Action
-
Metronidazole: It enters the bacterial cell and disrupts the DNA, preventing the bacteria from repairing themselves or reproducing. It is particularly effective against organisms that thrive in low-oxygen environments (anaerobes).
-
Povidone-Iodine: It acts as an oxidizing agent that denatures the proteins of microorganisms on contact, providing immediate disinfection of the skin surface.
Usage Precautions
-
External Use Only: Should not be used in the eyes, mouth, or internal cavities.
-
Staining: Due to the Povidone-Iodine, the cream has a brownish tint and may stain fabrics or skin temporarily.
-
Thyroid Sensitivity: Use with caution in patients with thyroid disorders, as prolonged use over large areas can lead to iodine absorption.
