Margo Neem Soap

Margo is one of India’s most iconic heritage soap brands, celebrated for its deep-rooted association with Neem and its “Swadeshi” (indigenous) origins. Launched in 1920 by Khagendra Chandra Das of the Calcutta Chemical Company, it has been a household name for over a century.

Margo is positioned as a therapeutic and beauty soap. Unlike many modern soaps that focus purely on fragrance or “moisturizing cream,” Margo leans heavily into the medicinal and antibacterial properties of its core ingredient: the Neem tree (also known as Margosa, from which the name “Margo” is derived).

Key Ingredients

• Neem Oil: The star ingredient. Each bar is often marketed as containing the “goodness of 1000 Neem leaves.”

• Vitamin E: Added to modern formulations to provide skin nourishment and prevent the soap from being too drying.

• Glycerin: Helps maintain skin moisture.

• Natural Oils: Traditionally formulated with vegetable oils rather than animal fats.

 History & Heritage

• The Swadeshi Movement: Margo was born during India’s independence struggle. Its founder, K.C. Das (a Stanford graduate), created it to provide an Indian-made alternative to British hygiene products.

  Evolution of Ownership: Originally made by Calcutta Chemical Co., the brand was later acquired by Henkel India, and is currently owned and manufactured by Jyothy Labs (since 2011).

• Logo Design: Interestingly, the iconic logo of the brand was originally designed by the legendary Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray.

 Product Variants

While the “Original Neem” bar remains the flagship, the brand has expanded to stay relevant to younger generations:

• Margo Original Neem: The classic green, hard-milled bar with a strong, distinct herbal scent.

• Margo Neem Naturals: Variants enriched with additional ingredients like Aloe Vera and Jasmine or Rose Water and Almond Oil for a milder, more moisturizing experience.
