DESCRIPTION

The Hicks Dumark Clinical Thermometer, also known as a Para thermometer, is a type of analog thermometer for measuring body temperature. It is a product of Hicks Thermometers India Limited, a well-known name in the Indian market for medical devices.

Here is a general description of the Hicks Dumark Clinical Thermometer:

Type and Construction:

Clinical mercury-based, glass thermometer. Some sources also refer to it as a “prismatic white” or “oral use” thermometer.

  • Material: It is made of glass and contains a small amount of mercury. The thermometer uses the principle of mercury expansion when heated to indicate temperature
  • Design: It typically has a white enamel finish and an imported white capillary or glass tubing. The design is user-friendly and portable.

 Specifications:

  • Temperature Range: The thermometer has a dual-scale display, showing temperature in both Celsius (°C) and Fahrenheit (°F). The typical range is:
    • Celsius: 35°C to 42°C
    • Fahrenheit: 94°F to 108°F or 94°F to 110°F
  • Accuracy: It is designed to provide accurate readings for monitoring body temperature, with a reported accuracy of ±0.1°C.
  • Usage: It is suitable for oral, underarm (axillary), and in some cases, rectal temperature measurements.
  • Reading: The thermometer requires a few minutes (e.g., 2-5 minutes) for the mercury level to stabilize and provide a reading. The reading is taken by observing the mercury level against the scale.
  • Portability: The thermometer is compact and often comes in a blister pack or with a convenient storage case for easy portability.
  • Safety: As a mercury-based thermometer, it is crucial to handle it with care and follow proper cleaning and storage instructions. Do not wash with hot water or bite on it to avoid breakage. Proper disposal is necessary if the thermometer breaks due to the hazardous nature of mercury.

Note: While digital thermometers have become more common, mercury thermometers like the Hicks Dumark are still in use and are known for their reliable and accurate measurements. The Hicks Dumark model (A-02) is also certified with an ISI mark, which indicates compliance with Indian standards.
