How to Use Hand Sanitizer

Apply the right amount: Squeeze or pour a small amount of hand sanitizer into the palm of one hand. The amount should be enough to cover the entire surface of both hands.

Rub your hands together: Vigorously rub your hands together, making sure to cover all surfaces. This includes the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.

Keep rubbing: Continue rubbing until your hands feel completely dry. This usually takes about 20 seconds.

Remember, hand sanitizer is most effective on hands that aren’t visibly dirty or greasy. If your hands are heavily soiled, it’s always best to wash them with soap and water if possible.

While hand sanitizer is an excellent tool for hygiene, especially when soap and water aren’t available, frequent use can lead to some side effects. Most of these are related to its main ingredient: alcohol.

Side Effects

Skin Dryness and Irritation: The alcohol in hand sanitizer is very effective at killing germs, but it also strips the natural oils from your skin. Over time, this can lead to dryness, flaking, cracking, and even a condition known as irritant contact dermatitis, which can cause redness and itching.

Allergic Reactions: Though rare, some people may experience allergic contact dermatitis. This is usually not caused by the alcohol itself, but by other ingredients like fragrances or preservatives that are added to the sanitizer. Symptoms can include redness, swelling, and an itchy rash.

Ingestion Toxicity: Hand sanitizer is for external use only. Swallowing even a small amount can be dangerous, especially for children. The high alcohol content can cause alcohol poisoning, leading to symptoms like confusion, vomiting, drowsiness, and, in severe cases, more serious health issues.

Potential for Vapors: Using hand sanitizer in a small, poorly ventilated space (like a car) can cause you to inhale the vapors. In some cases, this has been reported to cause minor symptoms such as headache, nausea, and dizziness.

How to Minimize Side Effects

Moisturize: To combat dry skin, apply a hand cream or moisturizer after the hand sanitizer has dried completely.

Use as Directed: Only use hand sanitizer on your hands, and never ingest it. Always supervise children when they use it.

Use in Well-Ventilated Areas: When applying hand sanitizer, especially in an enclosed space, ensure there is proper air circulation.
