EMTY Syrup

DESCRIPTION

EMTY Oral Solution (often referred to as syrup) is a medication primarily used as an osmotic laxative.

Key Information:

1. Main Active Ingredient: The most common formulation of EMTY Oral Solution contains Lactulose. (There is also a separate product called EMTY PEG which contains Polyethylene Glycol and electrolytes, but the standard EMTY Syrup/Oral Solution is Lactulose-based).
2. Therapeutic Class: Osmotic Laxative/Purgative.
3. Primary Uses:
   • Treatment of Constipation: It works by drawing water into the bowel, which softens the stool and makes it easier to pass, thereby relieving constipation.
   • Treatment of Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE): This is a decline in brain function due to severe liver disease. The medication works here by helping to reduce the amount of ammonia (a toxin) in the blood by drawing it into the colon for removal.
4. Mechanism of Action (Lactulose):
   • Lactulose is a synthetic sugar that is poorly absorbed in the small intestine and reaches the colon mostly unchanged.
   • In the colon, it is broken down by gut bacteria into mild acids.
   • These acids draw water into the colon through osmosis, increasing the stool’s water content and volume, which stimulates bowel movements (peristalsis).
   • For Hepatic Encephalopathy, the acidification of the colon also traps ammonia, facilitating its removal from the body.
5. Important Notes:
   • It typically takes at least 24 to 48 hours (1 to 3 days) to show a therapeutic effect for constipation.
   • It is important to drink plenty of fluids (6-8 glasses of water) while taking this medicine.
   • Common side effects may include flatulence (gas), bloating, nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain.
