DESCRIPTION
Please note that there are different variations of COREX syrup that are labeled “Sugar Free,” and their composition and uses vary significantly. All cough and cold medicines, especially those containing controlled or potent ingredients, should only be taken as directed by a healthcare professional.
Here is a description of the two most common “Sugar Free” COREX syrups:
1. COREX LS Sugar Free Syrup
- Primary Use: Typically used to treat a productive cough (cough with mucus or phlegm) associated with conditions like bronchitis, bronchial asthma, and other respiratory disorders.
- Active Ingredients: It is a combination of three medicines:
- Ambroxol (a mucolytic)
- Levosalbutamol (a bronchodilator)
- Guaifenesin (an expectorant)
- Mechanism of Action:
- Ambroxol thins and loosens the mucus.
- Guaifenesin helps to clear the mucus from the airways, making it easier to cough up.
- Levosalbutamol relaxes the muscles in the airways and lungs, widening them and making breathing easier.
- Common Side Effects: Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, headache, dizziness, increased heart rate, and skin rash.
2. COREX T Sugar Free Syrup (or similar formulations containing Codeine and Triprolidine)
- Primary Use: Used to treat dry cough (non-productive cough) and associated allergic symptoms.
- Active Ingredients: It is a combination of two drugs:
- Codeine (a narcotic cough suppressant)
- Triprolidine (an antihistamine)
- Mechanism of Action:
- Codeine works centrally on the brain’s cough center to decrease the urge to cough.
- Triprolidine blocks the action of histamine, providing relief from allergy symptoms like a runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing.
- Important Safety Note: This type of formulation containing Codeine is a habit-forming drug and carries a risk of dependence. It may also cause significant drowsiness and should be used with extreme caution.
