DESCRIPTION
Kenacort 0.1% Oral Paste (Triamcinolone Acetonide) by Abbott is a specialized corticosteroid formulation designed for the effective management of inflammatory and ulcerative lesions within the mouth.
Product Overview
-
Active Ingredient: Triamcinolone Acetonide ($0.1\%$ w/w).
-
Formulation: A gritty, emollient dental paste that forms a protective film over the affected area.
-
Purpose: To provide relief from pain, itching, and inflammation associated with oral sores.
Key Features
-
Adhesive Property: Unlike standard creams, this paste is designed to stick to the moist surfaces of the mouth (mucosa), ensuring the medication stays in contact with the sore for an extended period.
-
Protective Barrier: It acts as a physical shield against irritation from food, drink, and tongue movement, which helps speed up the natural healing process.
-
Anti-Inflammatory: Rapidly reduces redness, swelling, and tenderness of the oral tissue.
Common Uses
-
Aphthous Stomatitis: Commonly known as recurring mouth ulcers or “canker sores.“
-
Traumatic Lesions: Sores caused by accidental biting, orthodontic braces, or ill-fitting dentures.
-
Desquamative Gingivitis: Inflammation of the gums.
-
Lichen Planus: Chronic inflammatory conditions affecting the lining of the mouth.
How to Apply
-
Dry the Area: Use a clean cotton swab or tissue to gently dab the ulcer dry.
-
Apply, Don’t Rub: Use a small amount (about $1/4$ inch) and press it onto the lesion until a thin film develops. Do not rub it in, as this will cause the paste to crumble and lose its adhesive quality.
-
Timing: Ideally applied at bedtime to allow the medication to work overnight, or after meals.
Important Precautions
-
Infections: It should not be used if a fungal, viral (like herpes), or bacterial infection is present in the mouth unless an anti-infective treatment is used simultaneously.
-
Pregnancy/Lactation: Consult a healthcare professional before use.
-
Side Effects: While rare, some may experience local irritation or thinning of the oral mucosa with prolonged use.
