DESCRIPTION
Bactigras (often phonetically searched as “Bactiguaze”) is a medicated paraffin gauze dressing used extensively in wound care to prevent infection while keeping the wound moist.
Think of it as a “non-stick” barrier that also packs a punch against bacteria.
Key Features
-
Composition: It consists of a leno-weave cotton gauze impregnated with white soft paraffin.
-
Active Ingredient: It contains Chlorhexidine Acetate (0.5%), a powerful antiseptic that works against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
-
Non-Adherent: The paraffin coating prevents the dressing from sticking to the wound bed, making removal much less painful and protecting new tissue growth.
Common Uses
Bactigras is generally used for “clean” wounds that are at risk of infection, such as:
-
Minor burns and scalds
-
Lacerations and abrasions
-
Skin graft sites (both donor and recipient)
-
Pressure sores or leg ulcers
How to Use It
-
Clean the wound: Ensure the area is cleaned with saline or water first.
-
Application: Peel the protector papers off and place the gauze directly over the wound.
-
Secondary Dressing: Because it is an open-weave gauze, it doesn’t absorb much fluid. You usually need to place an absorbent pad (like a simple gauze swab) on top and secure it with tape or a bandage.
-
Frequency: It is typically changed when the secondary dressing is saturated, or every 24–48 hours depending on the wound.
⚠️ A Quick Heads-Up
While it’s great for preventing infection, it shouldn’t be used on more than 10% of the body area at once to avoid potential side effects from the chlorhexidine. Also, if you know you have an allergy to chlorhexidine, stay far away from this one!
